Saturday I used my pass to get a few laps in the passenger seat of a Nascar “stock” car at Stafford Speedway in CT. Stafford is a half-mile track still used for pro racing.

My original plan was to bring the family, and do something with the kids afterwards. Well ‘something’ does not exist in this area of CT except for the track and a new elderly housing complex next door. Plan B, now out on my own, was to hit the track and then find some twistys and get lunch at a BBQ place recommended by JEM. However that got killed because I needed ot rush home to make an open house on a property I was hoping to buy. So when I showed up early as requested I had an hour to kill before getting out on the track. This was good because I had downed a large coffee and needed to dispose of it. I was fascinated by the bathroom.

Finally out on the track they had us get into two groups, those who would just be doing a ride-along, and those who would get to drive. I was with two other guys just doing the ride along, who i’ll name Steve and JimBob. Steve was maybe about 60 and was a bit nervous, Cletus seemed like 30, looked 90, and could have actually been anywhere in between and was quite excited.

We all had fun. Steve was happy to be alive, and Cletus was whistling thru the gap of his missing teeth, jumping and clicking his heels. I found being out on the track was just as much fun as being in the car. Actually, If i blinked too long I probably would have missed that part of it. After getting suited up the sit you on the door for a photo op and then strap you in. At this point I’m looking at a safety harness from the Jurassic age and thinking this guy better just stay out of the wall. As we pulled away the sound was amazing. Carburetors, no emissions anything, just an engine, a metal cage and a fiberglass shell. Everything rattles, and every bump was felt. As we approached the turn, I was wondering if he was going to slow down. He did but not nearly as much as I expected. We entered the banked turn and the car held. I was amazed at the G-forces coming at me in all sorts of directions.

Lap, 1, lap2, lap3 and we’re back in the pits. It was quick. If I had paid for this myself, I probably would have been pissed. That was also something interesting, everyone there had gotten this as a gift. While I waited for the other group to finish up I got to talk to one of the drivers, who raced in an amateur NASCAR league. They also talked about how they just started a dirt track experience. It sounded crazy and probably a lot more fun.

in the end it was a good time but I found it to be over priced. I went to get my photo, which not surprised was not included in the entry fee, and was a crazy $49. The whole thing probably lasted half an hour with 2 minutes actually being in the car. There was also some cool stuff in the parking lot
